Network also promises to let customers donate ten percent of their spend to chosen charity
A new mobile player, The People’s Operator (TPO), has launched in the UK, promising to donate a quarter of its profits to charities and community groups.
Charitable organisations will receive ten percent of the call, text and data spend of any customer they refer to the network if they become a partner. If they don’t become a partner, customers can nominate a charity.
TPO is currently working with a number of organisations, including the NSPCC, The Trussell Trust and Child Line, and expects more to sign up in the coming months. Charities and community groups who want to become strategic partners must have been in existence for six months, and can also apply to benefit from The People’s Operator Foundation, an independent charity that will distribute the 25 percent.

“The People’s Operator represents a fundamental shift in the way commercial utilities support communities and causes,” said Andrew Rosenfeld, chair and co-founder of TPO. “The more profit that is generated, the more we can pass on to deserving parts of society.”
The network operates on a pay-as-you-go basis only at the moment, but TPO has promised to introduce pay-monthly plans in the near future. Interested parties can get hold of a SIM card from today.
Calls and texts between TPO users are free, although subject to free use, while calls to other networks are charged at 12.5p a minute and texts 7.5p. Data costs 12.5p per megabyte, with a number of voice, text and data bundles available from December.
“TPO offers customers the opportunity to benefit from a great mobile deal while supporting their favourite causes, simply by using their mobiles as they do every day and not giving anything more from their own pocket,” added Mark Epstein, vice-chair and co-founder of TPO.
