HP has announced a return to the ultra-light and portable Chromebook market with a slim and colourful new 14 inch laptop.

Acting as a refresh of the company’s existing model, first released in September 2013, the HP Chromebook 14 will feature a 1080p Full HD IPS display and a battery life of nine hours and 15 minutes – far longer than any other HP model on the market.

Inside, there’s Google’ Chrome OS, powered by an Intel Celeron N2840 chip clocked at 2.16Ghz, 16GB of storage and 2GB of RAM, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a single USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports, with the entire model measuring just 17.8mm across and weighting in at 1.78kg.

“HP is delivering new premium features that customers want on Chromebooks to create amazing experiences at an affordable price,” said Kevin Frost, HP’s vice president and general manager of consumer personal systems.

“We are excited to offer the new HP Chromebook 14 to give customers fun and function with a fresh color palette, bright displays and great battery life in thin, stylish and affordable designs.”

Chromebooks have proven to be an increasingly popular product line for PC manufacturers as customers demand low prices and high flexibility.

Recent data from Gartner estimated that Chromebook sales will reach 7.3 million in 2015 – a 27 percent increase year on year, as the education and business sector pushed sales to a new high.

Last year, Acer took the lead to become the largest worldwide Chromebook vendor last year, thanks to sales of over two million units in 2014, ahead of Samsung.
