ViaSat To Demo 100Gbps Ethernet Encryption

ViaSat says industry-first technology will allow security-conscious firms and public sector to upgrade bandwidth without need to change equipment

ViaSat is to demonstrate the first single-port 100Gbps encryption drive, claiming it will allow companies and public sector organisations to share large amounts of data safely.

The satellite and secure network firm will test the technology with the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) at the Supercomputer Conference (SC15) in Austin and claims the new device will offer businesses the “nearest thing possible to guaranteed safe sharing of data.”

The partners will send encrypted traffic 2,500 miles across the US using a 100Gbps software defined network (SDN).

data encryptionThe port’s main selling point is that it can scale from 10Gbps to 40Gbps to 100Gbps, meaning companies don’t have to constantly change their encryption equipment. It can be updated remotely via software, allows for low latency communications and integrates with other networking technology like SDN.

“ViaSat’s new high-speed Ethernet encryption product family brings decades of ViaSat experience and technical innovation in protecting classified government information to the commercial security product market,” said Jerry Goodwin, chief operating officer, Government Systems Division, ViaSat.

“Our first-to-market high-speed encryption device gives organizations that transmit sensitive intellectual property and business-critical data between sites, a proven encryption technology that is both fast and leverages the latest networking and security features to ensure data in transit will not be intercepted or exploited.”

ViaSat offers encryption tools for military organisations and governments around the world, while most recently it agreed a deal with Boeing that will allow airlines to order aircraft with satellite Wi-Fi equipment pre-installed.
