If the government is serious about its commitment to driving a greener economy, it should take this opportunity to tackle the crux of the problem and encourage businesses to cut the amount of waste they produce in the first place.

If more organisations were encouraged to prolong the life of existing equipment through repair work, we’d soon see a significant drop in the amount of e-waste produced in the UK. This would not only help the government to meet its WEEE directive targets despite the pressures on its budget – it would also have the added benefit of helping organisations to cut costs of their own.
