Apple’s new phablet sports a sleek design and water resistance

Apple has revealed the iPhone 7 Plus, its latest ‘phablet’ style smartphone that sports dual cameras and a sleeker design than the iPhone 6S Plus.

Sharing a lot in common the iPhone 7, the new Plus model has stereo audio, a Force Touch enabled home button, and the five colour options of its smaller sibling.

It also touts the same 5.5in Retina HD display found in the iPhone 6S Plus, but this time the screen sits in a tweaked design which has dropped the headphone port in favour of using its Lightning port to pump audio to Apple’s EarPod headphones and its new wireless AirPod headphones.

The iPhone 7 Plus also sports the new gutsier four core A10 Fusion chip that gives it more CPU and graphics power than its predecessor. Battery life has also been boosted to 2910mAh from 2750mAh.

All this comes at a price with the iPhone 7 Plus 32GB, 128GB and 256GB models priced at £719, £819 and £919 respectively.

Dual cameras

Apple iPhone 7 PlusWhere the iPhone 7 Plus sets itself apart from the iPhone 7, other than dimensions, is with its rear dual 12MP camera array.

It consists of one wide-angle lens camera and one 56mm telephoto camera, which when combined brings the large zooms found in digital cameras to a smartphone.

By merging the two cameras on both the hardware and software side, the iPhone 7 Plus allows for a 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom, which when combined with optical image stabilisation should enable high-quality pictures to be taken on the phablet. It also allows for the depth of field in a photo to be adjusted, similar to a DSLR.

This dual camera setup is likely to appeal to Apple fans keen to take high-quality photos on their phone. But is is not the only new phablet-sized phone around, as LG’s newly announced V20 flagship phone comes sporting a brace of screens rather than cameras, giving Apple another rial to compete with alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.
