Industry-focused edition of Glass being shipped out by Google, reports claim

Reports of the death of Google Glass may have been somewhat premature, as the company is reportedly shipping out a new generation of the head-mounted device to businesses.

According to the Wall Street Journal,  the new device is being secretly sent out to customers in the health care, manufacturing and energy industries, among others.

Glass has reportedly been redesigned to feature a rectangular build, and instead of a wire-like frame, features a button-and-hinge system to attach the mini-computer to different glasses.

Comeback

VirginGoogleGLass12It is claimed Google is also working on a new consumer-facing version Glass, which should be released later this year.

The company has apparently begun seeding the new Glass to software developers to help them create business-focused apps, with the goal of launching the device by the Autumn.

The speculation is the latest in a series for reports suggesting that Google Glass may be set for a comeback since the company officially pulled the device in January.

This includes a job advert last month that was looking to recruit an Advanced Technology Manufacturing Engineer at Google’s Mountain View headquarters.

The $1,500 device is still available for business customers to buy, with existing customers already including Tesco, Virgin Atlantic (pictured above), Edinburgh Airport and even the Dubai police force, all of which have piloted programs using Google Glass.
